Composting at Home – A Few Useful Tips

By | June 30, 2009

Composting at home is a good way of adding nutrients to the garden and reduces the overall garbage, going to the dump. Composting at home is a very easy job and requires no hard and fast rules to be followed.

It can be done just in the corner of the garden but composting bins can be purchased to give a neat and tidy look to the garden. The fungi, bacteria, worms and other insects are the friends that make the kitchen waste and garden waste into real, useful compost. So, these friends should be kept happy by giving them a steady supply of food, air and water.

These friends need two types of foods such as brown foods and green foods. Brown food includes straw, autumn leaves, saw dust and dead plant materials. These are eaten by the microbes and act as a source of energy for the microbes.

Green food items are vegetable wastes, green grass weeds, coffee grounds and tea bags. Since these items have a lot of nitrogen content in them, it offers a lot of protein to all the microbes for them to feed. A lot of air should be allowed to flow that would help the microbes to move freely and the pile should be turned now and then, to allow free air.

Water should be in the right quantity- no more or no less and it is better to have a good mix of the greens and browns to get rich, brown, nutrient rich compost for the plants.
