Worm Composter

Worms are the Nature’s garbage men and the best friends of a gardener. They have the unparallel skill to convert the organic waste into useful compost and live all their lives in the topsoil, to recycle the dead organic matter into useful material for plants.

This is effectively made use of in a worm composter which is a simple plastic bin, divided into sections with a tap at the bottom to drain off the “worm tea”. A worm composter can be bought from a shop or can be made at home.

A worm composter can be utilized to get rid of most of the kitchen waste like vegetable scraps and peelings, coffee grounds, paper towels, newspapers in small pieces and so on and hence the best place to keep the worm composter is near the kitchen door.

Pungent foods such as garlic, onions, citrus peel, dairy products and animal droppings are best avoided in a worm composter. Garden clippings and cuttings can be added. Since worms are very adaptable, the worm composter can be placed anywhere but if they are kept near the kitchen, they are easily accessible to just open the lid and throw the organic wastes in them.

If the worm composter is free of flaws, then, there would not be any chance for the worms to escape. Worms eat off the organic waste at a very rapid speed as much as half of their body weight every day and so, chances of worm composter, emanating a foul smell are less. Further more, most of the worm composters come with lid and filter and hence, it reduces the odors further.
