Building a Compost Bin

By | June 21, 2009

It is very easy and convenient to build a compost bin that would help to make rich home- made compost for the plants. A pail or a bin, about twenty four inches tall, which has a tight fitting lid, would suffice to build a compost bin.

The lid is essential because it is required to keep the insects out and moisture, intact. The compost pile needs aeration and so, eight to ten small holes must be made in the bottom of the compost bin. If needed, some holes on the sides and walls of the bin can be made.

Some shredded newspaper or dried leaves must be placed on the bottom of the compost bin to at least one quarter of the bin. It should be filled to half with, rubbish from the garden as also coffee grounds, onion skins and vegetable wastes. The compost pile must be stirred with the help of a shovel so that all the food scraps are covered with dirt.

The contents should be made moist by sprinkling with luke warm water until it gets moist and care should be taken not to soak it full wet. The lid also should have nine to ten small holes and every time food scraps are added, the contents of the pile should be stirred.

Building a compost bin does not take much of an effort and rich compost will be ready within two to three months. This can be used to cover flower beds and also to pot soil and can be sprinkled over grass, as a lawn conditioner.
