Earthworms are reputed for being friend of farmers since they are the most ideal for composting. Compost is the rotten material used as a fertilizer and earthworms that are very commonly found in the soil in damp areas are very efficient in making this compost.

Although there are more common types of earthworms, red wriggler worms is a real specialist in making compost. Red wriggler earthworms thrive in places where other worms cannot survive. Earthworms of this kind are very efficient in converting organic matter into compost which is very good for the plants.

Red wriggler earthworms grow up to two and a half inches long and can withstand extreme weather conditions, though a safe temperature range is between 38 and 95 degrees. Earthworms move in the soil searching for food and in the process, condition the soil. Simultaneously, they emit a nitrous fertilizer that is very rich in nitrogen, potash and phosphorous that is needed for the growth of the plants.

Some people may be adverse to the idea of growing worms and coming in contact with them but, in reality, it does not need any direct contact with the worms. It is enough to just place a compost bin along with a cover and place all the kitchen scraps and garden wastes in them. This forms a good and healthy diet for the worms who, in return, give a rich, black gold called compost. The plants and trees love to have this compost, to yield better flowers and fruits.
