Building compost is beneficial both for the plants and the overall look of the garden. A corner of the garden has to be chosen to build compost and it is better, if it is, as close as possible, to where the compost is going to be used.
Good compost should have alternate layers of green and brown compost, by which I mean a layer of kitchen waste and grass clippings should be made and then, a layer of brown wastes such as dried leaves, hay straw and shredded leaves must be placed. Tomato stems and green vines also make a good green waste and compost faster.
The green layer has to be topped with half an inch of dirt and clay has to be added to it. To get best results, the layers have to be repeated, in that order. The compost pile has to be kept away from animals and pests and hence, it is advisable to keep it in an enclosure. Air and water should be allowed to circulate freely since compost needs moisture to compost fast.
The compost pile should also be turned frequently with the help of a shovel. The right combination of one part of green waste to two parts of brown wastes produces a good, rich compost and things that have to be avoided in compost pile are meat, paper in large quantities, fish, meat, bones and so on. Also, compost pile that is at least three feet wide and three feet high are ideal.
