Composting Toilets

Composting toilets are simple devices that are used to compost human feces. In the natural process, composting is done by the Nature, whether it is human waste or other degradable materials, in the own process by Mother Earth during a long period of time.

But the time has come to think of composting human wastes, especially, in places where there is scarcity of water. To quote a fact, a family of four that uses flush toilet can utilize about hundred thousand liters of water each year, exclusively for flushing human faces and inevitably, this water goes into the sewage system and tend to contaminate the underground source of water.

But, if compost toilets are followed, it would help to save a large amount of water and has many more benefits. When operated in the correct manner, composting toilets can be very hygienic, clean and do not smell.

Basically, composting toilets have two separate chambers which are used alternatively. When one chamber is full; it is closed and allowed to decompose, while the other fills. When it is fully decomposed, the contents are removed and ready to be filled up, again. The end product is mature compost which is non- smelling and can be used in organic farming.

The composting toilets are designed such that once the process is complete; all the potentially pathogenic microbes are immobilized and destroyed. Composting toilets are very useful when used in large facilities like public buildings, schools and so on but proper training should be given to handle them in the right way.
