There are innumerable compostable materials around you, only if you have the intent to compost. Compost is very essential for the proper and nutritious growth of plants and comes from various materials in and above the soil.
For instance, animal manure is a good constituent of compost. Manure from animals such as cow, horse, sheep, rabbits and poultry can be collected along with their food remains and can be used as bedding for compost. The plant waste from the garden is the main ingredient in compost and if done in the correct way, can result in a valuable nutrient and humus source for the garden.
There are so many other materials from the garden like sweepings from the yard, kitchen waste, fallen leaves, twigs, branches and all sorts of rubbish that are organic in nature. Composting material can also come from fences around the homestead, vegetable gardens from various places. But grass clippings are the most effective constituent for composting.
When all such materials are gathered and kept uniformly moist throughout- because microbes need air and water to thrive-the materials decompose quickly. Properly composted wood chips can also be added along with manure, to speed up the process. It is better to add dry ingredients too, such as dead leaves and pine needles, to form a good ratio of compost. Soil composting is a very useful and effective pastime that is beneficial to the plants.
