The good old method of piling up the shredded leaves and grass clippings and stirring now and then would make good compost. This is quite a simple process but there is one drawback.
We cannot expect everyone to have enough space to make a pile of compost. Also, in this type, it is rather difficult to control the temperature of the compost pile. In addition, it is impossible to remove some compost when needed and one has to wait until all the materials are composted, completely.
This would result in multiple piles of compost in various stages of completion. Hence, there is a constant effort to enhance the process of composting, such as, upright bins which is a composting bin that allows more oxygen for aeration. And, it is comparatively easy to mix up the composting material.
As in the case of the pile type, here too, the moisture cannot be monitored properly and is a batch process. Next is the tumbler type of composters, where the material is added to the top and compost is removed at the bottom. But the downside of this type is, it is not possible to aerate the mixture, fully.
Therefore, the best composter is the drum type where a barrel is attached to a stand and can be rotated. This is free of all drawbacks since there is a drum inside the drum, material can be added to the outer drum and compost will discharge in the end of the rotating drum. Insofar, double drum type is the best type of composter that turns green grass and leaves into brown compost, magically.
