Compost Starters

Composting is a time consuming process, where the proper mix of food moisture and air constitute the ingredients. But, if you really need compost as fast as possible, a quick action of microorganisms is essential.

The compost pile already has a combined supply of brown, carbon rich material and green nitrogen rich material. Since moisture is present, the pile has to be turned to ensure that there is a tidy supply of oxygen and now it needs compost starter in the form of microorganisms to speed up the process.

Compost starters can be of two types namely, a blend of microorganisms ready to be used or starters that have to be mixed with water and poured over the pile. Both starters ensure speed composting. Since the starter has water, the microorganisms in the compost pile would instantly become active and start working.

The other types of compost starters are combination of microorganisms that are found in an active compost pile. They are found almost everywhere, such as, in the places where there are weeds and by just adding the soil to the pile would act as great compost starters.

In fact, the left over foods items that were lying in the fridge and the presence of bacteria and fungi in them, make a great compost starter when added to the compost pile. Though fine compost is ready when they are left as such, the process can be hastened by using compost starters.
