Compost is very important for enhancing the quality of the soil and for growing plants in a healthy manner. Since composting is a natural process involving waste garden and kitchen materials, it is very environmental friendly. How to make compost involves right materials, mixed in the right manner using right methods under right moisture level, time and by encouraging the compost creating organisms and avoiding pests.
Selection of the right method for making compost is very vital. Good quality garden compost can be made easily in a compost bin that is closed or using a compost pile. Compost bins can be purchased or can be made on our own using recycled brick or stone or wood and so on which can be very satisfying to the users. The next step is the selection of the right mixture for the compost; it should include both the brown and green materials for making compost. Too much use of green substances can results in a smelly, slimy heap which cannot be broken down well and too much use of brown substances could result in creating a dry heap. Hence balance is very important.
Many persons think that the composts would attract pests such as rats or other rodents, but it happens only when wrong ingredients are present in the compost such as meat or fish waste. Hence these ingredients should be avoided. Woodlice, fungi, fruit flies, bacteria and worms are some of the compost makers (natural) that they should be encouraged to grow in the compost. This can be done by getting some good compost from a friend and adding to the materials that are kept for composting or can keep the bin or heap come in contact with good quality soil underneath.
The bin or compost heap should be mixed regularly to keep them aerated so that it aid in quick composting. Normally compost can be made in eight to fifty two weeks time which could be used.
