Organic compost heap can be built using any organic materials such as old wool, vegetable and fruit peelings, stinging nettles, old or used cotton material, old leaves and stems obtained from the garden. When something big organic material like large fibrous or woody materials found, they have to be chopped or shredded in to smaller particles for better composting.

The sides of the organic compost heap should be straight and square; one should start building the compost heap from the outer side to the inner sides. While making the compost heap care should be taken not to build them very thick with grass clippings as it might hold the composting process. For controlling more acidity some amounts of ash or handful of lime can be added to the compost heap layers.

To begin the decomposition processes of the compost heap either herbal activators (effective) or nitrogenous activators can be used. Diluted urine in the four is to one ratio (four parts water and one part urine) or manure can be added as nitrogenous activators to the compost heap. When the compost heap is built on ground providing easy access to the worms help the composting process quick and effective.

The selected activator should be added to the compost ingredients prior to the building of the compost heap. For good air circulation some brushwood or prunings or drainage tiles can be laid at the base of the compost heap. For insulating the compost heap an old cardboard or old carpet piece can be laid on the top of it. When done properly the compost heap becomes usable within three months time.
